Course DescriptionPrerequisites: READING LEVEL 3 and any approved College Composition I course with a minimum grade of C. Examines a body of literature organized by the selection of material either from the works of one author, genre, or topic, or a combination thereof (e.g. science fiction, war novel, thrillers, horror, etc.). Course content to be announced each semester prior to registration. Credit may be earned in only one of ENG 224W, ENG 224HW, LIT 224W or LIT 224HW. (45-0)

Outcomes and Objectives

Describe and explain the type of literature and the subject constituted by the focus of the course.
  1. Define the subject of the course.
  2. Define the important terms, concepts, issues related to the subject and the literature of the course.
  3. Identify and discuss important personages in the subject area, such as literary and historical.

Analyze literature in the subject area.
  1. Interpret the meanings, both personal and thematic, of literary works.
  2. Discuss important ideas in the works read.
  3. Identify and describe the various literary forms, such as poetry, short story, novel.

Generate writing on a range of topics related to the subject area.
  1. Compose a significant body of rough draft about the subject area.
  2. Compose and revise a significant body of finished material, showing an ability to interpret the literature read.

Integrate the world of literary work with their own world as they perceive it
  1. Identify parallels between the literary world as the writer presents it and their own experience of reality.
  2. Judge the applicability of the "truths" of the work to their understanding of the world.

Participate in "writing to learn" activities.
  1. Perform writing tasks to promote learning.
  2. Write effectively for a specific audience and purpose.
  3. Demonstrate the learning of concepts through writing.
