Course DescriptionPrerequisite: READING LEVEL 3 and any approved College Composition I course with a minimum grade of C. Studies the background, developments, and the current state of modern poetry. Emphasizes poetry by American and British authors. Credit may be earned in ENG 220W or LIT 220W but not both. (45-0)

Outcomes and Objectives

Identify the elements of poetry.
  1. Identify imagery, metaphor, rhyme and rhythm, etc. in particular poems.
  2. Compose papers that illustrate the elements of poetry.

Analyze poems through recognition of their purposes, effects, and literary techniques.
  1. Discuss meaningfully the use of literary devices in poetry.
  2. Compose papers that analyze literary technique, purpose, and effect.

Interpret the meanings of poems.
  1. Assemble and synthesize the elements of particular poems to support an interpretation.
  2. Compose papers that reveal an understanding of poetry interpretation.

Read poetry for understanding and enjoyment.
  1. Compose self-assessments regarding attitudes toward reading poetry.
  2. Add meaningfully to class discussion.

Participate in "writing to learn" activities.
  1. Perform writing tasks to promote learning.
  2. Write effectively for a specific audience and purpose.
  3. Demonstrate the learning of concepts through writing.
