Course DescriptionPrerequisite: READING LEVEL 1. Designed for those whose academic and personal needs call for building skills, confidence, greater comprehension, and enjoyment of reading. Includes techniques for understanding and remembering a wider reading vocabulary. Applies reading strategies to a wide variety of reading materials under the guidance of an instructor. Does not earn credit towards graduation. Credit may be earned in only one of ENG 093 or RDG 093 or ENG 108. (60-0)

Apply appropriate active reading strategies to a variety of texts.
Objectives:
  1. Previewing and predicting.
  2. Accessing prior knowledge.
  3. Formulate questions.
  4. Make annotations.
  5. Create graphic organizers.
  6. Summarize information.
  7. Review information.

Demonstrate the ability to make meaning from a variety of texts:

  1. Recognize main ideas, key supporting points, and organizational patterns.
  2. Explore applications and purposes.

Apply various techniques for learning and using both self-selected vocabulary and teacher-assigned vocabulary.

  1. Practice pronunciation and read-aloud fluency.
  2. Practice identifying and using context clues.
  3. Practice identifying and using word parts.
  4. Use paper and electronic references.

Access, analyze, and use information appropriate for a specific purpose.

  1. Access information from sources.
  2. Analyze information from sources.
  3. Use information from sources.

Demonstrate an awareness of how reading can be relevant, important, and/or enjoyable.

  1. Practice inquiry.
  2. Generate pre and post reading reflections.

  4. Discuss or informally present learning

Participate in writing to learn activities.
