Course DescriptionPrerequisite: PSY 211 with grade of "C" or better. An examination of symptoms, and treatment of psychological disorders, including the psychodynamic, behavioral, humanistic, and neuroscience views of abnormal behavior. (45-0)


Outcomes and Objectives

Assess abnormal psychology as a field of psychology, including its historical and present context.
Objectives:
  1. Discuss the standards used to identify abnormal behavior.
  2. Discuss the historical views and treatments of abnormal behavior.

Compare and contrast models of psychological abnormality, and associated treatments.
Objectives:
  1. Define the major models of abnormal psychology: psychodynamic, cognitive, humanistic, behavioral, and biological.
  2. Describe the major models of psychological treatments: psychodynamic, cognitive, humanistic, behavioral, and biological.

Examine the anxiety disorders, including symptoms and treatments.
Objectives:
  1. Describe the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, phobic disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder in accordance with DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition).
  2. Identify effective treatments for each of the anxiety disorders.

Examine the mood disorders, including symptoms and treatments.
Objectives:
  1. Describe the symptoms of dysthymic disorder, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder.
  2. Identify effective treatments for each of the mood disorders.

Examine problems of the mind-body connection.
Objectives:
  1. Identify the somatoform disorders, including the symptoms and treatments associated with these disorders.
  2. Identify the eating disorders, including the symptoms and treatments associated with these disorders.
  3. Identify the substance-related disorders, including the symptoms and treatments associated with these disorders.
  4. Identify the sexual and gender disorders, including the symptoms and treatments associated with these disorders.
  5. Identify the psychosomatic disorders, including the symptoms and treatments associated with these disorders.

Examine the psychotic disorders, including symptoms and treatments.
Objectives:
  1. Discuss the symptoms of schizophrenia, and the delusional disorders.
  2. Identify the treatments for the psychotic disorders.

Examine the personality and dissociative disorders, including symptoms and treatments.
Objectives:
  1. Identify the ten personality disorders.
  2. Discuss the salient symptoms for each of the personality disorders, and identify potential treatments.
  3. Identify the dissociative disorders.
  4. Discuss the symptoms of dissociative amnesia, dissociative fugue, and dissociative identity disorder, and identify potential treatments.

Perform writing tasks to promote learning of concepts.
Objectives:
  1. Document attainment of skills learned.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the subject.
