Course DescriptionPrerequisites: LEVEL 2 READING or LEVEL 2 WRITING. Studies the scientific principles underlying experience and behavior. Examines human behavior in terms of the intrapsychic, behavioral, physiological, and environmental viewpoints. Also examines basic research methods, learning, social factors, developmental changes, physiology, sensation, perception, motivation, intelligence, and personality. Credit may be earned in PSY 211 or PSY 211H but not in both. (60-0)


Outcomes and Objectives

Identify and explain the scientific foundations of psychology, and apply these principles to describe various psychological phenomena and research.
Objectives:
  1. Distinguish between experimental and non-experimental researach, including understanding the major advantages and disadvantages of each research technique.
  2. Identify the type of research cited in the popular press, and understand the limitations of such research.
  3. Review the various career pathways for psychologists and the diffrences between psychologists and psychiatrists.
  4. Describe the main components of the nervous system and their functions, and the basic biochemical components of behavior.
  5. Distinguish between how senses work, including their abilities and limitations, and how perception impacts one's views of the world.

Describe the foundations of positive adjustment.
Objectives:
  1. Discuss the relationship between stress and overall health and wellness, including the various methods people utilize to cope with stress.
  2. Describe the normal and alternative states of consciousness achieved through sleep, hypnosis, and various psychoactive substances.
  3. Identify the stages of the sleep cycle (inccluding REM) and discuss the various theories of dreaming.
  4. Identify components and types of motivation and emotion.
  5. Describe how social situations impact our behaviors.

Identify the basic principles of learning, memory, and cognition.
Objectives:
  1. Explain and contrast the principles of learning in each of the major learning types including classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and observational learning.
  2. Describe how memory works, why it often fails to work, and how to improve memory ability.
  3. Compare the various theories of intelligence and discuss how intelligence is measured.

Differentiate between various psychological disorders & treatments.
Objectives:
  1. Distinguish between each of the major theoretical perspectives in psychology, including biological, cognitive, behavioral, psychoanalytic, sociocultural and humanistic.
  2. Explain the possible causes and treatments for mental illness with regard to each of the major theoretical perspectives in psychology.
  3. Identify the main symptoms of the major psychological disorders.
  4. Evaluate how mental illness impacts individuals and social groups.

Distinguish between normative and non-normative development of the individual.
Objectives:
  1. Evaluate both sides of the nature vs. nuture argument.
  2. Describe the main theories of cognitive, social, and moral development.
  3. Discuss theories of personality development from biological and psychosocial perspectives.
  4. Differentiate between the methods of personality assessment.
  5. Discuss the development of human sexuality and gender.

Perform writing tasks to promote learning of concepts.
Objectives:
  1. Document attainment of skills learned.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the subject.
