Course DescriptionPrerequisite: A "C" grade or better in a college level composition II course. Introduces Holocaust studies. Covers the years 1933 to 1945, focusing on the role of perpetrators, victims, bystanders, and those involved in resistance and rescue. Uses a variety of literature that assesses how did the Holocaust happen? Who is responsible? What can we learn from this catastrophe? (45-0)


Outcomes and Objectives

Analyze literature in the subject area.
Objectives:
  1. Interpret the meanings, both personal and thematic, of literary works.
  2. Discuss important ideas in the works read.
  3. Identify and describe the various literary forms, such as poetry, short story, novel, and non-fiction.
  4. Identify and explain symbols and metaphors.
  5. Connect symbols and metaphors with theme or main ideas.
  6. Analyze Holocaust works for dominant themes and motifs.

Generate writing on a range of topics related to the subject area.
Objectives:
  1. Compose a significant amount of rough draft about the subject area.
  2. Compose and revise a significant amount of finished material, showing an ability to interpret the literature read.
  3. Compose an interpretation of a specific work in writing.

Apply significant historical terms/concepts as related to the Holocaust.
Objectives:
  1. Define and correctly use key terms in discussions and writings.
  2. Explain significance of above.

Participate in "writing to learn" activities.
Objectives:
  1. Perform writing tasks to promote learning.
  2. Write effectively for a specific audience and purpose.
  3. Demonstrate the learning of concepts through writing.
