Course DescriptionPrerequisite: A "C" grade or better in a college level composition II course. From a reading of selected novels the student will develop understanding of the novel form. The student will also learn how to derive personal meaning and satisfaction from novels chosen from different times, places, and cultures. (45-0)


Outcomes and Objectives

Identify different types of novels by common elements.
Objectives:
  1. Classify such types as epistolary, satirical, romantic, and realistic novels.

Analyze novels through recognition of their literary techniques.
Objectives:
  1. Compose an analytical paper explaining the craft of a novel.

Integrate the world of the novel with their own world as they perceive it.
Objectives:
  1. Identify parallels between the fictional world as the novel presents it and reality.
  2. Judge the applicability of the "truths" of the novel to their understanding of the world and themselves.

Participate in "writing to learn" activities.
Objectives:
  1. Perform writing tasks to promote learning.
  2. Write effectively for a specific audience and purpose.
  3. Demonstrate the learning of concepts through writing.
