Course DescriptionPrerequisite: OAT 151 with a "C" (2.0) grade minimum. Studies effective verbal and nonverbal communication in business. Emphasizes audience reaction, logical organization, tone, clarity, and accuracy. Involves career information, the research process, and reporting. (45-0)

Outcomes and Objectives

Demonstrate the ability to function as an effective team member.
  1. Discuss and display team development, team roles, dealing with conflict, and methods for reaching group decisions
  2. Use techniques for organizing team-based written and oral presentations
  3. Reflect on the effectiveness, interaction, and dynamics of the team

Access, analyze, and utilize information.
  1. Identify an information need
  2. Access electronic information utilizing the on-line card catalog; electronic indexes; and Internet resources such as e-mail and the Web
  3. Analyze and evaluate the appropriateness of the sources
  4. Evaluate and utilize the information for oral and written reports

Demonstrate an understanding of primary and secondary research.
  1. Develop and administer a questionnaire to gather primary data such as that used in an occupational interview
  2. Develop a Works Cited or References page consisting of traditional and electronic sources for use in a business report
  3. Analyze and evaluate the data for use in reporting

Demonstrate knowledge of written reporting techniques commonly used in business.
  1. Write a short report or proposal utilizing the results of primary and/or secondary research on a business related topic
  2. Write a long report (in an approved style) complete with preliminary and supplementary pages, appropriate graphics, and in-text citations

Demonstrate knowledge of effective oral reporting techniques.
  1. Deliver impromptu reports
  2. Plan presentation(s) by determining its purpose and analyzing the audience
  3. Prepare presentation(s) by collecting the data and organizing it in a logical format
  4. Develop effective visual aids for presentation(s)
  5. Deliver presentation(s) in a clear, confident, and efficient manner

Demonstrate knowledge of the process of entering the job market.
  1. Explore employment resources available on line and/or in Career and Employment Services
  2. Write a resume
  3. Write an application letter
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of effective interview techniques through testing and roleplaying
  5. Write related employment messages

Demonstrate professionalism appropriate for the workplace.
  1. Attend class promptly and consistently
  2. Follow written and oral directions
  3. Complete and submit assignments on time
  4. Participate constructively in classroom activities
  5. Display civility toward other class members and the instructor
  6. Demonstrate academic integrity
