Course DescriptionPrerequisites: ENG 253 or ENG 254 or ENG 256. Uses previous background in personal writing, fiction, or poetry. Includes work on style, voice, tone, vision, and other nuances in chosen genre. Includes peer critique, instructor comments, extensive revision, and close study of a contemporary or classic writer in the chosen genre. (45-0)

Outcomes and Objectives

Generate original work in chosen genre.
  1. Write personal essays, fiction, or poetry on a range of subject matter.
  2. Develop skills with style, voice, tone, and other nuances of the genre.
  3. Develop a vision of the world and express that vision in writing.

Revise and edit original work.
  1. Rewrite work in an effort to improve it.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of revision for the chosen genre.

Interact productively with instructor and peers for the purpose of developing writing skills.
  1. Give and receive verbal and written responses to student work.
  2. Demonstrate an open, yet discerning, attitude towards feedback.

Learn by reading contemporary or classic writers.
  1. Demonstrate ability to understand a contemporary or classic writer's craft and style.
  2. Experiment with another writer's craft and style.
